Remembering, honouring, educating, advocating: PWPSD students will reflect on the legacy of residential schools during Orange Shirt Day (OSD) events, the majority of which will align with the official observance on Wednesday, September 30. In keeping with the current public health measures, school events will not be open to the public.
PWPSD Indigenous Education Coordinator Brigitte Benning has developed an Orange Shirt Day Resource Guide for PWPSD schools, complete with suggested age-appropriate classroom resources and lessons.
The Grande Prairie OSD committee will release a local video on September 30, to discuss Orange Shirt Day and share messages from local community members – including some PWPSD staff. Orange Shirt Day is a reconciliation movement that grew from the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemorative event held in 2013 at Williams Lake, B.C., based on former student Phyllis Webstad's account of having her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school. The awareness campaign is an opportunity to continue the discussion on all aspects of residential schools.
