Peace Wapiti Academy welcomes new principal for 2024-2025 school year

Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) is excited to announce Mrs. Kaila Villiger as its new principal for the upcoming school year, making her just the third principal of PWA in its 23-year history.

Mrs. Villiger joined Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) in 2015 as an Inclusive Education Learning Coach, working to support teachers and staff at La Glace School, Elmworth School, Bezanson School and Peace Wapiti Academy. She joined the administrative team at PWA in September 2016. Mrs. Villiger holds a Secondary Education Degree with a major in English and a minor in French from the University of Alberta, and has completed master-level courses through Walden University with a focus on Inclusive Education.

Mrs. Villiger says she is excited to lead the PWA team of dedicated, exceptional educators and support staff. “I’m looking forward to working with our students and their families as I transition into the role of Principal at PWA. The close connection between school and community is evident in our school division. It has been my experience that availability, visibility, and trust with students, families, and staff is an integral part of forming lasting relationships, which I believe is important to educational success.” She says she is proud to be part of the PWA school community and honoured to serve with understanding, advocacy, and a sincere focus on contributing to its positive learning environment.

Mrs. Villiger, currently Assistant Principal at PWA, will be replacing Mrs. Wanda Gerard, who has been principal of Peace Wapiti Academy for over 20 years. Mrs. Gerard says it has been an honour and a privilege to serve as principal of PWA and is deeply grateful for the many relationships with students, their families, and staff. “The collaborative efforts of our exceptional teachers, dedicated support staff, engaged parents, and our remarkable students have been a source of inspiration for me. As I prepare to step into retirement, I know I will carry the spirit of this vibrant learning community with me and cherish the memories and experiences for years to come.” Mrs. Gerard is looking forward to working closely with Mrs. Villiger to ensure a smooth transition and is confident that her leadership brings dedication to fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

Peace Wapiti Academy is one of eight high schools within PWPSD and is one of the Division’s larger schools with nearly 700 students.
