Starting May 10, 30 Robert W. Zahara (RWZ) School students ranging in grades 2 through 6 will be performing their rendition of Mary Poppins Jr. The musical, based on the stories of P. L. Travers and the Walt Disney film, showcases original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman.
RWZ teacher and Mary Poppins Jr. director and choreographer Mrs. Clara Girvan says it’s been a long road to get here, but she and her students are very excited to perform. “We started working on the musical production of Mary Poppins Jr. in 2020. Rehearsals were well underway when we had to cancel due to the pandemic. We hoped we would one day be able to complete our work, and now here we are four years later working on the production.” A team of dedicated staff, including some who have since retired, are back to bring the musical to life. Costumes have been brought out of storage, the stage is set, and three Grade 1 students from 2020 have returned to take on larger roles as they near the end of Grade 5.
Mary Poppins Jr. is the school’s ninth musical and Mrs. Girvan’s last production before she retires.
Schedule
Performances will take place in the RWZ gymnasium, and tickets are available from the school office for $5 each.
